David Wood, Newburyport Massachusetts Shelf Clock by Michael Basch

Item ID: 1533 - Ca. 1970. Michael Basch commissioned reproduction David Wood, Newburyport Massachusetts Shelf Clock. The 34" tall mahogany and mahogany veneer case is of the finest construction. From the dovetail joints on the bottom of the case to the huge dovetails which mount the movement rails to the case to the finely detailed inlays and crossbanding on the doors to the carved fretwork on the top of the case, the clock is truly a work of art. The thick and heavy steel dial is expertly painted and in mint condition. The steel hands are finely cut and blued. The quality of the 8 day time only movement is equal to the quality of the case. The finish and patina are absolutely superb. The clock is in excellent running condition and ready to simply be enjoyed. In researching the clock I talked with Mike Basch's son who said that his dad commissioned 11 of these David Wood Shelf clocks and 11 Cummins banjo clocks. He does not know who was commissioned to build the clocks but he noted that his dad worked closely with Elmer Stennes on other projects. Another example of this clock is shown the December 1977 NAWCC Bulletin #191 article on contemporary clockmaking. The clock is identical to this timepiece. Unfortunately, the article does not give details about the clock or the maker. An original David Wood Shelf Clock recently sold on Ebay for $26,100. This reproduction is certainly a fine alternative at a fraction of the price. Please view the photos for additional information and email me if you have questions.
