Robert Herbst, Marblehead, Banjo Clock

Item ID: 1726 - Ca. 1965 Robert L. Herbst, Marblehead, Mass. Banjo Clock. The clock is finely crafted of solid mahogany. The workmanship second to none. The dial is beautifully hand painted and in mint condition. The reverse painted and gold leaf glasses are perfect. The door glass shows the famous sailing vessel The Hanna under sail with 2 American flags below. The history that follows shows how appropriate the theme of the glasses is to a clockmaker from Marblehead, Mass. "The two-masted, 78 ton schooner Hanna made its mark in America's history by becoming the first armed vessel to sail for the Continetal Navy. The little Hanna was the beginning of a small fleet of United States warships fitted out to aid in the siege of Boston by capturing provisions ships sailing for the harbor from British ports. Originally owned by merchant John Glover of Marblehead, Massachusetts, the Hanna was leased to the newly-formed Continental Navy at a cost of "one dollar per ton per month." After outfitting, the Hanna sailed for adventure on September 5, 1775. The following day she boldly captured the British sloop Unity which was en route to Boston from Portsmouth and heavily laden with naval stores and provisions. The Hanna then returned to port at Beverly, Massachusetts and after much delay in finding a new crew (the original crew mutinied), she set sail again near the end of September of that same year. Due mainly to her inexperienced crew, the Hanna on October 10, 1775, was run ashore by the British ship Nautilus near Beverly. After a spirited engagement between the British vessel and the American townspeople on shore, the Hanna was saved from capture and destruction. Though she was soon decommissioned by Washington after her engagement with the Nautilus, the Hanna will forever hold the distinction of being America's first warship and the forerunner of today's modern American Navy." The quality Kilbourn and Proctor weight driven movement has been serviced and is in fine running condition. The clock is ready to hang and enjoy. Email me if you have questions.

Burleigh Gold Front Presentation Bride's Banjo Clock

ID: 1481 - Ted Burleigh Gold Front Presentation Bride's Banjo Clock. In 1970 after years of gold leaf restoration and reverse glass painting as a hobby, Ted and Fran Burleigh formed the Gilders Workshop in Winchester, MA and began producing fine quality reproductions of banjo clocks based on the design of Lemuel Curtis.

To quote from a Burleigh sales brochure -

“The design of the Burleigh Presentation Banjo Clock is adapted from that of the Lemuel Curtis banjo made in the early 1800’s. Like the original, it’s distinguishing features are a somewhat narrower throat than usual, and the concave molding used on the door and throat which is finished in burnished gold and therefore reflects the rope trim which is laid in it. Also as in the original Curtis clock, all cases are made of hand rubbed Honduras mahogany, with five piece back boards of pine. The door, throat frame and bracket are also of pine, the wood customarily used in pieces to be gilded.

The gilding is executed in the traditional manner. Six hand applied coats of gesso (a mixture of whiting and animal hide glue) are sanded to a porcelain-like finish, and three or more coats of bole (a red clay and glue mixture) are applied to the parts before they are gilded. Twenty-three karat golf leaf is applied over an oil size in the area to have a matte finish, and over a water size in the areas to be burnished.

The dial, with Roman numerals is hand painted and the hands are hand filed to a delicate slimness. The movement, which is patterned after the early weight-driven types is made by Kilbourne & Proctor.”

This Bride’s clock with white painted case is a fine example of their work. The clock is flawless. The gilding is perfect. The dial is perfect. The reverse painted glasses are signed by Fran Burleigh, dated 1979 and include a notation by Fran stating “Painting a direct copy of one from a clock by S. Willard.” The case is numbered TEB – 42 and dated 77. The clock is in good running order and ready to hang on your wall and enjoy. Email me if you have questions.

Burleigh Girandole Clock No. 33 (Sold)

Item ID: 1715 - Ted & Fran Burleigh formed the Gilders Workshop in 1972 and in 1973 they had the opportunity to disassemble and measure and then make the plans to replicate an original L. Curtis Girandole. The Girandole case itself is considered by many to be the most elegant American clock design with the finely hand-carved eagle finial and acanthus leaf bracket set off by forty-nine burnished gold trim balls. All aspects of building the exact copy of the Curtis clock were performed by the Burleigh husband & wife team in their own shop to ensure replication accuracy and quality control. There were a very limited number of these Girandoles produced by the Gilders Workshop and we are fortunate enough to have two of these beautiful clocks (one is in our personal collection) which received an award in an NAWCC clock makers competition. Short of spending hundreds of thousands for one of the few original Curtis Girandole’s extant this beautiful clock by Ted Burleigh is as close to an affordable original as it gets for the serious collector of fine timepieces. This clock is in exceptional condition in all respects. The clock is number 33. Ca. 1979. The Perry's Victory glasses are signed by Fran Burleigh and dated 1980. The photos tell the whole story. Enjoy! Email me if you have questions.
