Co., New York and Bridgeport". The 11 jewel movement is signed Boston Clock Company and has serial number A 938. The nickeled plates are highly decorated. The movement has been serviced. The case has been polished and lacquered, and the dial has been restored. The clock is in superb condition in every way. The USS Raleigh was the first steam ship of the modern Navy completely built by the US government at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA. The USS Raleigh was launched on March 31, 1892 and served in the Spanish American War. The ship has a very well documented history. Below are links to the specifications and history of the vessel. It is exceedingly rare to find marine clocks with the ships name engraved on the dial. In addition, I have a ca. 1901 unused postcard picturing the Raleigh, an original "Star of the East" magazine published by the crew of the ship while in Shanghia, China in March, 1906 which has photos of the officers of the ship and and an original Souvenir of the Naval Review from the Grant Memorial Inaugural on April 27, 1897 that includes photos and specificatons of the entire White Squadron of the US Navy which includes the USS Raleigh. Email me if you have questions.

Chelsea 12" Ships Bell Chain Clock (Sold)
Item ID: 1584 - The 12" Chelsea Ships Bell Chain Clock is in superb condition. The dial is completely original. The red brass case has been polished and lacquered. The movement was just overhauled by Lenny Taube. The clock is mounted on a custom mahogany base. The movement has serial number 156372. The Chelsea Sales Ledger shows that the clock was sold on 1/31/1924 to H. H. Dodge. Since the Chelsea sales ledgers were transposed from the actual sales receipts, which were lost in a fire at the factory long ago, I suspect that the clock was actually sold to H. E. Dodge, Jr of Dodge automotive fame and the "E" was accidentally changed to an "H". H. E. Dodge, Jr. was an avid boater who started Dodge Boat Works and was obsessed with boat racing. It may be a small leap to make this connection but as we look at the details it becomes more and more probable. Below are links to further information about Dodge, Sr and Jr. and the amazing yacht SS Delphine. Email me if you have questions.
