John Creed Jennens 10 Bell 5 Gong Bracket Clock (Sold)
Item ID: 1216 - John Creed Jennens created two and three train bracket clocks of the best quality in London between 1863 and 1875. This superb 10 Bell 5 Gong Bracket Clock is an example of Jennens best work. Walter Durfee, the renowned antique dealer from Providence, RI, USA, sold only the finest clocks in his shop. The first clocks that Durfee imported from England in the 1880's were Jennens bracket clocks and reproduction eighteenth century tall cases clocks. Jennens clocks are recognized by many to be simply the best - superior to the better known and more numerous J.J. Elliott clocks. The fabulous 26 1/2" tall ebonized case is adorned with elaborate repousse mounts on the front, sides and basket top depicting delicate floral florishes, father time, hourglasses, and the J C Jennens, London name and cast bronze urn finials, cast bronze side handles with leaf motif bases and a cast bronze carrying handle . The clock stands on 4 ornate bronze feet. The dial has a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and subsidiary dials for chime silent, regulation and choice of Westminster, 8 Bell or 10 Bell chimes. The dial spandrels are gilt cast bronze. The 8 day chain triple fusee movement is work of art. The back plate, pendulum bob movement mounting brackets, and other mounts are all exquisitely hand engraved. The movement has been serviced and is in fine working condition. Please view the photos carefully as they say much more than words. Enjoy. Email me if you have questions about this rare and exceptional clock.
